New Pennsic video project seeks support!

Zorikh Lequidre (known in the SCA as Lord Ervald the Optimistic), who was involved in the production of "The Pennsic War: A Video Documentary" 20 years ago,and has since released the "Special Edition 10 years ago and the DVD more recently," is producing a follow-up, titled "Return to Pennsic,"

In this new project, Lord Evald will be finding out what has changed and what has stayed the same over the past 20 years. He will be joined by "Simply the Best" G.A. West, a fitness professional, life coach, and former champion pro wrestler who has had no experience with anything even remotely connected to the SCA. He will be finding out about the physical aspects of SCA combat, the life choices people make to be in the SCA, and how the personas that people take on affect what they get out of the SCA.

This is a very ambitious project that is already receiving a lot of buzz. The crowned heads of 7 kingdoms are among the many significant people who have signed on to be interviewed. Merchants and artisans have agreed to contribute garb and accessories for G.A. West's first Pennsic. however in order to make this project all it has the potential to be, it needs just a little more funding.

There is a fundraising campaign set up at http://www.indiegogo.com/Return-to-Pennsic Through this website you can contribute to the project and get special perks, including copies of the video, listing in the credits, a link to your website, even a share of the profits!

You can find out much more about this project at the website, and see preview videos with Lord Ervald and G.A. West. Please support this project and help this new video come to reality!

http://www.indiegogo.com/Return-to-Pennsic

Disclaimer: This production was approved by the Pennsic staff, but is not an official SCA production and does not delineate SCA policy

Camp 505 DVD

Hello

I wanted to take a moment of your time to tell you about a new Sayoc Kali DVD (www.sayoc.com) that was just released by Personal Tactics NYC (www.PersonalTacticsnyc.com).

In March 2008 Pamana Tuhon Chris Sayoc, Head of Sayoc International Group, invited 12 instructors to a special week-long training session in Knife Combatives at the Sayoc training facility in Florida. The session, called Camp 505, focused on the Sayoc training methodology usually reserved for family. The goal was to radically improve speed and accuracy over a short period of time.

Camp 505 Documentary DVD (2-disk set)
• Explores the “How” and “Why” of the Sayoc Training Methodology
• Demonstrates how instructors at Camp 505 learned to isolate their Quick Twitch Skeletal muscles to increase speed
• Closely follows 3 Instructors in their breakthrough journey through the 1week training session
• Features Extensive Interviews with
• Pamana Tuhon Chris Sayoc
• Tuhon Carl Atienze
• Tuhon Felix Cortez

Camp 505 Training DVD
•	View detailed, step-by-step demonstrations of all the training in the 505 Documentary
•	Train yourself in the 505 Methodology on your own time
•	Learn the complete DCAT Flow Drill as seen in the Documentary
•	Practice along with two additional training sessions only available on this DVD:
• Pamana Tuhon Chris Sayoc teaches “2 Knives vs. 2 Knives”
• Tuhon Carl Atienze teaches “Single Knife vs. Single Knife.

The DVD’s are available from www.sayoc.com

Hope you enjoy them.

WEKAF Equipment

Has anyone purchased or have an opinion on the WEKAF full contact stick fighting equipment? My opinion is that it seems pretty costly and although it's more than likely required for entering one of their tournaments, for my students and training I think I could piece together some decent equipment from a sporting goods re-sale store (used hockey pads, lacross equip. etc.)

Also the helmets don't look like they have much protection for the back of the head. They probably have rules that state no hitting to the back of the head, but this is one of my problems with sport MA. I won't water down my style of teaching to cater to tourney rules. In a real fight if you have the opportunity to end it by hitting to the back of the head then do it.

Any opinions or input would be greatly appreciated.

appropriate use of training tools.

You know, all this talk of proper use, care and protection of training weapons in the FMA V. SCA thread got me to thinking. I remember a post not too long ago in another sword board where someone thought that using a Bokken, unprotected...at full speed...for training in an art he has had no "formal" training in...was just the greatest thing in the world.

What got me to thinking is, how many folks out there are training in a sword art using the time honored method of "figure it out for yourself" or, I saw "conan" and "blade" do this so it must be right.

While I respect those who "want" to learn a sword art (and folks...Kali, Arnis and Eskrima are essentially blade arts), I have to question the wisdom of the "watch and imitate a movie" method of training. Even legitimate training videos, while they are a good start, are by no means any substitute for an actual "live" instructor who is "qualified" to teach in that art..

A few definitions clarified...your best buddy who took 2 years of Tae Kwon do is NOT qualified to teach you..conversely, the sensei who has studied, practiced and competed for 15+ years and has reached a significantly high rank...is!

Watching Conan and Blade and Kill Bill is NOT an appropriate way to learn how to use a sword...studying under a Kendo or Shinkendo master is!

Hanging out with ren faire/SCA folks who regularly beat the snot out of each other with shinai and wasters is NOT the best way to learn fencing or sword fighting (although sometimes it's not a bad start). Studying under someone who has studied and practiced Western Martial Arts and Fencing is a VERY good way to learn to use a sword.

Figuring it out for yourself and mimicking what you see in movies...bad. Learning from a qualified, certified training instructor, Good!

Now on to safety..

Training without adequate protection is VERY BAD AND WILL GET YOU OR SOMEONE ELSE INJURED!

Training with poorly cared for tools is VERY BAD AND WILL GET YOU OR SOMEONE ELSE INJURED!

Using your training tools improperly is VERY BAD AND WILL GET YOU OR SOMEONE ELSE INJURED!

Weapons making: again, if you have not taking any courses or training on blade smithing or weapons making...it's probably not a good idea to try it yourself without someone experienced to guide you.

Long story short...Appropriate training by a knowledgable, qualified instructor in the fighting art you are training in. Appropriate protection for yourself and care for your training tools. If you were injured during training, either you or your partner was negligent in some fashion or someone is just being an asshole and was out for blood when they should not have been.

Guys and gals...experience is the best teacher when in comes to injuries and I have had "just" enough of them to learn to protect myself and care for my equipment so neither I nor my opponents gets hurt during "training"...on on the street, do what you need to do...if a broken shinai is laying on the ground and you think it will hurt your attackers...go for it. In training, safety is first and foremost and should NEVER be neglected. Use the right tools for the job and use them safely and no one gets hurt...ever.

I have just found this site by accident and must admit it is great to see one regarding stick fighters. I have created a non profit discussion forum that gives any martial artist the opportunity to post their thoughts on their art that they study as well as comment on what they see. I happen to study the art of Arnis. American Modern Arnis is the title, and I respect all forms of the stick fighting art. Please visit the site and post your comments regarding any art you study. This discussion forum is for educational purposes. See: http://forum.aspoonful.com. Go to the Martial Arts section. This site would help to make a great contribution to it.

I have been a FMA player for some time now engaging in traditional play and competing in padded and live stick tournys. I recently watched a day of bashing and smashing done by the SCA (Renaissance) Peeps. Pretty interesting, all armored up and using huge rattan weapons. Has anybody tried thier stick skills and concepts with the SCA?
Watching them made me want to play too!

Hi all,

I have moved from the SF Bay area in sunny California to the high desert in Washinton state to an area known as the "Tri Cities". I am looing for anyone within 50 miles of Pasco Washington who practices either Filipino Kali, Escrima or Arnis (preferably Kali).

I had started training in Korean Joong Bong with a group in Kennewick but someone got a wild hair up their bum and decided that since I was not at least at "red belt" level in Tae Kwon Do that I had no right to train with weapons in their dojo so i was politely asked not to come back until I had acheived that.

Needless to say, I am not interested in TKD at the moment, only in Kali and eventually Silat to enhance my skills. I am looking for someone I can practice / train with and learn from.

If you're in the area and interested, please let me know...thanks
Point sparring vs. Continuous sparring

In the weapons sparring arena we see 2 main types of sparring for points for the win. There is point sparring, where the fight is stopped everytime there is a touch or some type of hit that scores, and then fighters are reset. Then there is continuous sparring, where the fight goes for a set length of time and the fighters go at it uninterupped and judges keep track of scoring hits and also affective defensive techniques.
Neither of these types are perfect and hold pros and cons.
Also there is a reason, or philosophy why one would use one or the other in a compition.
In western fencing, the SCA, and the Cold Steel Challange there is the adherence to more of the point type system.
In Eskrima you will see both, where in Dog Bros you will usually see continuous sparring.
Ones tactics and strategies will be differnet for either.
Though we have been doing this for years, is there a better way thats do-able? Can we modify, hybridize, or embellish these rules so sport can more imitate combat?

Has any one done the Cold Steel Challenge in Ventura, CA? It will be at the beginnin of Oct. Its a good chance to try ANY of your techniques (well. . . no take downs) in the ring using knife and also sword! Its a sort of padded weapons match, so armor reqs are minimal; head gear, and gloves.
Len Thompson (Cold Steel Prez.) is talking about doing some different weapon types this year like halberd, and sword and dagger, we'll see.
You can check it out on their web site. Last year it was dominated by filipino practitioners, with some fencers, kendo guys, and even a couple of SCA guys.
Its a blast, and a good oppertunity to see some different approches to fighting.
Some cool demos too, Ron Baliki did some fighting sarong and silat blend stuff, pretty slick.

Bartitsu and the art of self defence with a walking stick. (fighting with a cane)

Hello. My current interest in fighting with sticks is self-defence with a walking stick. The victorian art of 'Bartitsu' made use of this, in conjunction with japanese jiu jitsu. The famous detective, Sherlock Holmes was a practitioner of Bartitsu, as well as a single-stick fighter.

I am not sure of the website, but you can find many of the original articles published by Barton Wright about Bartitsu "Self-defence with a walking stick", at the electronic journal of Martial arts.

Barton Wright in turn learned from Professor Pierre Vigny, who taught 'La Canne' as a method of fighting with a cane or walking stick. 'La Canne' has been absorbed into 'Savate', a martial arts form from France that was learned from French Street thugs.

You can buy excellent canes designed for fighting and self-defence at Canemasters in the U.S.

http://www. canemasters.com

Ted Truscott in British Columbia, Canada has an excellent video about fighting with a cane. You can purchase it at his website http://www.raisingcanes.net

Dog Brothers Fall Gathering

For those of you who will be in the Los Angeles area this weekend, the Dog Brothers are having their Gathering on Sunday. If you are not hip to what this is, its basically a bunch of three-minute, full-contact stick fights with a minimum of protection. Its non-competitive so there are no winners or losers but its a great chance to see some great stickfighting.

They hold these events twice a year and they are usual some great fun. There's close to 35 participants signed up so this one should be a good one.

Go here: http://dogbrothers.com/wrapper.php?file=gathering.htm for info.

Introduction time

Hey all,

Figured it's time to get this board moving a bit. Probably the best way to get started is to start posting everyone's bio and background. I guess I'll start

I'm a second degree black belt under the Doce Pares Federation learning GM Cacoy Canete's brand of Eskrima, Eskrido, and Pangamot. Learning the additions that M. Chris Petrelli and Guro Sherril Johnson have made, such as incorporating silat and aikido, make it a very enjoyable art.

Otherwise, I live in Seattle, been married for over a year now, play with fire, and need to go camping more often.

What about you?

What to do when injured?

Hey, here's a new experience for me, and I'm wondering what other people have done in this situation.

I'm rarely injured or sick, so when I do get a cold or flu, it tends to be pretty hardcore. I picked up some virus a few weeks back that had me coughing pretty hard. Doc gave me a prescription for some suppressants, but not before I had a coughing fit one night that actually threw out my lower back.

I've also never had lower back problems and didn't realize how painful and completely body-disrupting they can be. I haven't been able to go to class for 3 weeks, and apart from standing in my living room twirling, I'm wondering what others may do or have done during their time off-the-mat.

Signed up, searched around, and saw a definite need for a tribe for Eskrimadors and the people who want to be one ;)
